Bumping Into The Kids

Posted by schoolspirit on 6 April, 2008

CasperIt’s the final day of the Easter holidays today, and I’m about to achieve something I’ve never managed in any holiday period since I started teaching. I’m about to complete an entire holiday without meeting any of the kids!

Usually, no matter how hard you try, sometime during the holiday period you will run into one or two kids you recognise (often those you teach) somewhere around town. I’ve managed to bump into school kids I know in the most obscure places, as I’m sure just about every other teacher has done also. A two day trip to the beach, a quick one day drive out to some remote bush location, a night at the MCG watching the footy… almost without fail you will bump into a kid from school who will call out at the top of their voices and wave at you.

Somehow, this holiday, it hasn’t happened. And I haven’t just been hiding at home fifteen kilometres out of town (although I agree, that helps!). Last night watching the footy at the MCG was the last chance any of the kids had (and I kid you not, I’ve often bumped into kids there amongst the 80 000 other people there – often only a few rows away!), and as I’ll be staying safely inside today at home, I’m not going to see any today either.

Which… in a strange sort of way… has been a little sad!
